Military Branches Unite for Healing Competition
200 wounded, ill and injured service members competing in Colorado Springs, Colorado for the 2014 Warrior Games Presented by Deloitte
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Warrior Games presented by Deloitte are Sept. 28-Oct. 4, 2014, at the U.S. Olympic Training Center and the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. More than 200 wounded, ill and injured service members and veterans will participate in seven sports (archery, cycling, shooting, sitting volleyball, swimming, track and field, and wheelchair basketball). Athletes represent Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force and Special Operations.
The Warrior Games bring these athletes together in a healing competition that reinforces the fact that life continues even after serious injuries. By supporting each other during the training process and competing against other branches of services, wounded warriors build a strong, positive bond with each other and deeply move those around them. Their stories of transformation and determination are truly inspiring, even beyond this competition.
“The men and women competing this week at the Warrior Games are the epitome of the American spirit,” said Charlie Huebner, Vice President of the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Foundation. “This week, we are celebrating the resiliency of our wounded, ill and injured service members and veterans, and the determination that brings them to Colorado Springs to compete for their respective branches. It is incredibly humbling to be alongside our nation’s heroes as they experience the power of sport. While medals will be won over the next six days, the most important result is the awareness that the Warrior Games and its competitors create nationally about the impact and need for sustainable physical activity programs at the community level for persons with physical disabilities and visual impairments. The United States Olympic Committee is proud to play a role in helping provide those opportunities.”
The competition will continue through October 4th
Competitions are free and open to the public, and the Closing Ceremony will take place as a part of the Air Force/Navy game day festivities.
